WOUNDED LAND: stories of COMMUNITY RESISTANCE
against an opencast coal site
Free pop-up exhibition – all welcome
Sunday 22nd of March, 12-6pm at the Roxy Theatre, Leadgate
Wounded land shares the stories of people who fought an opencast mine in County Durham. Their story is that of a bittersweet victory. The Campaign to Protect Pont Valley was key in ending opencast coal mining in the Northeast. However, the people that sought to protect their valley with an occupation, were unable to save it completely from mining.
The exhibition brings together pieces from the Pont Valley archive of destruction and resistance. Wounded land celebrates community resistance against ecological destruction, highlights the emotional and intimate stories of what it means to resist, and seeks to inspire resistance elsewhere for what has not been lost yet.
Wounded land is a collaboration between photographer Simone Rudolphi, sound artist Floor van der Hout, and Pont Valley Protectors.

What We've Been up to
The development is taking place in two phases – starting with 3 brand new multi-functional studio spaces, a new foyer and a café bar snugly housed in the cinema’s original projection room.
The second phase is to bring the stage and auditorium back to life, creating a 360-seat Proscenium Arch Community Theatre with a grand circle to North West Durham.
Our aim is to ensure full disabled access to all the studios, the café, grand circle, stage, dressing rooms and orchestra pit to ensure everyone in our society is on a level playing field.
Please come and share your life experiences with us so we may all learn and move forward together.
Let’s build a community together. Bring your skills.
Lets get things moving.
Build a Community where all are safe, strong & valued
